US pilot escapes sacking over homophobic rant


A pilot for Southwest Airlines was briefly suspended, then reinstated, over an anti-gay rant accidentally broadcast to air traffic control.

The unnamed pilot was flying between Austin and San Diego in March when it is believed a button for the cockpit microphone was hit by mistake.

Air traffic control staff heard the pilot complaining to the first officer about “f**king homosexuals” and calling other staff members old, overweight and ugly.

In a recording obtained by the Houston Chronicle, the pilot is heard saying: “Well, but I had Tucson to Indy all four weeks. And, er, Chicago crews 11 out of 12. There’s 12 flight attendants – individuals – never the same flight attendant twice, 11 f**king over the top f**king ass f**king homosexuals and a granny.
“Eleven! I mean think of the odds of that. I thought I was in Chicago, which was party land. After that, it was just a continuous stream of gays and grannies and grandes. Well, I don’t give a f**k. I hate a hundred per cent of their asses.”
He was also heard referring to a gay flight attendant as a “fag”.
The incident was not reported until this week.

Southwest Airlines officials told the Houston Chronicle yesterday that the pilot had returned to duty after diversity training and apologising to Federal Aviation Administration officers.

A spokeswoman confirmed he was suspended without pay but would not say for how long. The first officer was not reprimanded.

Chuck Magill, vice president of flight operations, called the comments “offensive” but said the incident was an isolated one.

However, the union representing Southwest Airlines flight attendants said it was considering filing a charge with the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission over the remarks.

In a statement given to Towleroad.com, the union said: “We are calling on Southwest Airlines to address this problem throughout our company, not as an isolated incident, but as a mandate that our workplace will be free from discrimination of all forms as a condition of continued employment.

“We have instructed our attorneys today to investigate the possibility of filing an EEOC charge with the federal government. We hope not to have to go that route, and instead, we are counting on Southwest Airlines to remedy this injustice.

“Bigotry in the workplace is bad business and unacceptable behaviour on the ground and at 30,000 feet.”

Anti-gay singer Buju Banton jailed for drug offences


Homophobic reggae singer Buju Banton has been sentenced to ten years in jail for drug offences.

The Jamaican star, real name Mark Myrie, was found guilty in February after a previous mistrial.

He was convicted of intent to distribute cocaine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offence, and using a telephone to facilitate a drug trafficking offence.

Banton was arrested in December 2009 after FBI agents intercepted a drug deal in Florida.

At Tampa federal court in Florida, Judge James S Moody threw out the firearms conviction, saying he accepted Banton was not carrying a weapon and did not know that other men in the drug deal were armed.

The singer’s attorney, David Markus, said he could be free in six years, allowing for time already served and good behaviour.

Banton will appeal against the sentence, his attorney added.

The singer has been accused of making ‘murder music’ with homophobic lyrics.

His notorious 1988 hit Boom Bye Bye appears to incite the burning, shooting in the head and pouring acid over the faces of gay people.

The star claims he has not performed the song live for years but video footage appears to show him singing it at a concert in 2006.

John Barrowman tells Torchwood fans: ‘Expect man sex and nudity’


Torchwood star John Barrowman says that the show’s next series will be the sexiest yet – with “man sex” and “full-on” nudity.

The 44-year-old star said ardent fans know his character Captain Jack Harkness likes men and women.

He told Press Association: “I’m naked in one episode – I am full-on naked. I am bumping and grinding in this one. I am having man sex.

“The true die-hard fans know Jack is omnisexual – he likes men and women.

“People who tune into this series will just think Jack is gay, because he just has full-on man sex. It was really fun.

“One day, I get to shoot a helicopter and save the world, and a couple of days later, I get to have sex with a 24-year-old. It’s the most perfect job in the world.”

This series, named Torchwood: Miracle Day, has a larger cast and budget due to BBC Wales partnering with US entertainment network Starz.

The show is set to begin in the UK in July.

Two arrests after man is found dead on Clapham Common


Two men in their 40s have been arrested after a man was found dead on Clapham Common, London.

Police were called to the popular gay cruising spot at 2.35am on Wednesday morning after reports of a body being found.

The man, believed to be in his 40s, was discovered at the West Side of the park. An initial post-mortem examination did not establish a cause of death and police are awaiting further test results.

He has not been formally identified and his death is currently being treated as unexplained.

At this stage, police say they do not believe homophobia played in a part in the man’s death, although they are working with LGBT organisations.
