Sporadic clashes still continue between Cambodian, Thai troops

PHNOM PENH, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia said on Sunday that Thai troops still continue launching mortar shells into Cambodian territory at the 13th century Ta Krabei temple in Oddar Meanchey province throughout Saturday night until Sunday morning.

"Every night, Thai troops open fire at our troops at Ta Krabei temple," Suos Sothea, deputy commander of the artillery unit, told Xinhua by telephone from the battle fields.

"On Saturday night at 10:00 p.m. (local time), they had used weapon M97 to shell at the temple," he said. "Then, occasionally, they continued to fire mortar shells at us at 2:00 a.m. until 6:00 a.m. this Sunday."

"Cambodian troops had fired back in early Sunday morning in order to defend our territory from the invasion," he said. " However, we had just used small guns to retaliate."

Thai business people in Cambodia not affected by border clashes: minister

The majority of Thai business people in Cambodia have not been affected by the Thai-Cambodian border clashes, according to the Thai Minister of Commerce, Thai National News Bureau report on Saturday.

Thai Minister of Commerce Pornthiva Nakasai said she had checked with the Thai commercial counselor of the Thai embassy in Cambodia and found that Thai business activities were carrying on normally despite a series of artillery exchanges at the Thai- Cambodian border.

According to the minister, most of the Thai businesses in Cambodia are located opposite the northeastern Thai provinces of Sa Kaeo and Trat while the clashes usually take place in Surin and Buri Ram provinces.

Nevertheless, Pornthiva said she has assigned the commercial counselor to monitor the situation very closely in order to make ready assistance for the private sector if it is requested.

Long Beach residents' recollections of Cambodian horror will be heard

LONG BEACH — A year-and-a-half ago when refugee survivors of the Khmer Rouge regime gathered in Long Beach to fill out forms about atrocities they witnessed in the mid-'70 s in Cambodia, they had no idea whether it would make a difference.

On Saturday, many of them got their answer. Leakhena Nou, a sociology professor at Cal State Long Beach told a gathering that their statements would be part of an upcoming trial against four former leaders of the Khmer Rouge.

"We wanted to make sure your voices are heard thousands of miles away," Nou told the elderly crowd that assembled at the Mark Twain Branch Library.

"Your applications have been heard and have been accepted by the court," Nou said. "You are heroes."

New jail term [TRAVESTY] for Cambodian opposition leader

PHNOM PENH, April 25, 2011 (AFP) - A Cambodian court on Monday slapped exiled opposition leader Sam Rainsy with yet another two-year jail term, this time for accusing the foreign minister of being a former Khmer Rouge member.

Phnom Penh Municipal Court found the outspoken politician guilty in absentia of defamation and inciting discrimination for claiming in a 2008 speech that Hor Namhong once belonged to the blood-soaked communist movement.

Sam Rainsy, who lives in France, now faces a total of 14 years in prison if he returns to Cambodia following a string of convictions that opponents say are politically motivated.

"The verdict is unjust," Sam Rainsy's lawyer Choung Chou Ngy told AFP, adding that he will now discuss with his client whether to appeal the ruling.

(VOV) - Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s visit to Cambodia and his co-chairing the second Vietnam-Cambodia investment promotion conference on April 23 and 24 is expected to accelerate bilateral trade and investment ties.

The relationship between Vietnam and Cambodia has developed in various fields since the establishment of diplomatic ties on June 24, 1967.

Bilateral cooperation mechanisms including the Vietnam-Cambodia Joint Commission for Economic, Cultural, Scientific and Technological Cooperation, the Conference on the development and cooperation of border provinces and the Joint Border Committee meet annually and have brought practical results. The regular exchange of the two countries’ delegations, especially the recent visits by the two countries’ leaders, have helped fasten the fine neighbouring relationship, traditional friendship and long-term sustainable comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.

Updated: Lesbian couple sue Brighton hotel

A lesbian couple claim that a hotel manager in Brighton barred them from staying in a room together because they are lesbians.

Rebecca Nash, 22, and Hope Stubbings, 19, from Andover, claim that the manager of the Brunswick Square Hotel called them “rejects” when they complained.

In response, the hotel claimed the pair never had a booking and denied being anti-gay. A manager said that the building is full of gay couples during Pride weekend.

The couple, who are both office workers, say they arrived at the seafront hotel for a weekend away last October after booking a double room by telephone.

But they said that when they arrived, they were told that rooms were only available for “couples and families”.

They claim that when they said they were a couple, the manager said: “No two boys, no two girls. We don’t have any rooms.”

They claim that the manager then became aggressive and threatened to call police before shouting: “I don’t accept rejects in my hotel”.

The couple could not find anywhere else to stay for their trip and had to drive home.

They are claiming sexual orientation discrimination against the hotel and are being represented by Liberty.

In an email to PinkNews.co.uk, the manager of the Brunswick Square hotel, who would not give his name, said the couple had made an enquiry and had not booked a room.

He said they were asked to leave because they were “loud” and “rude” and said the hotel had never discriminated against anyone.

He added that the hotel was full of gay couples during Pride.

James Welch, Liberty’s legal director, said: “Laws prohibiting hotels and guesthouses from discriminating against gay men and lesbians have been in place for four years now, but clearly the message still isn’t getting through.

“With the Equality Act 2010 now in force, my clients intend to show that they have as much right to enjoy a quiet weekend away together as any other couple.

This is the latest in a number of cases around hotels accused of barring gay couples.

Earlier this year, Steve Preddy and Martyn Hall won £3,600 in compensation after successfully suing a Christian-run Cornwall hotel for refusing them a room.

Another couple, Michael Black and John Morgan, are suing a Berkshire B&B after the Christian owners said they could not stay.
